We live in a fast-paced modern society. However, some people try to change it. First, we had the slow food movement. It tells us to take the time to enjoy fresh, homemade, healthy food, rather than wolfing down fast food. Now, this idea has extended beyond the kitchen and into the streets as the Slow City movement.

The Slow City movement began in 1999 in Italy, when four city mayors got together to discuss making their cities more livable. They came up with no fewer than 54 points to follow. These include promoting organic food, banning genetically modified foods, preserving historic buildings and traditions, and promoting renewable energy systems.
So far, over 65 cities in Europe have been certified as Slow Cities, and more than 300 others have asked about joining them. One town in China, Yaxi, has become the first Slow City in that fast-growing country. Perhaps, in time, it will be seen as a truly global phenomenon, but until then, what’s the rush?
