Making Arrangements for Dinner
Daisy: Hi, this is Daisy Lin speaking.
Tom: Hello Daisy, it’s Tom from AMC.
Daisy: Hi Tom. I’m really looking forward to finally meeting you in person next week.
Tom: Yes, it’ll be good to see you at the conference. If you’re free on Wednesday night, I hope I can treat you to dinner after the meeting.
Daisy: Let me check my schedule. Hmm… Yes, I’m free on Wednesday, and I think it’ll be nice to go out to dinner, too.
Tom: Great. Could you tell me what kind of restaurant you prefer?
Daisy: Actually, I’m interested in sampling2 some of the local food. I try to do that whenever I travel. I’m sure you know all the best restaurants.
Tom: All right, I’ll pick a nice place. Do you have any dietary references?
Daisy: No, I’m happy to try anything. I’m really looking for somewhere traditional, though. I find I can learn a lot about a country and its culture from its food and dining customs.
Tom: Yes, that’s true.
Daisy: I learned that when Chinese people praise a meal, they might say it’s so good that it tastes like it comes from a restaurant.
Tom: Whereas Western people compliment food by comparing it to their mothers’ home cooking.
Daisy: Exactly!
Tom: That’s interesting. I look forward to having a nice conversation with you when we finally meet up.
